"In the twenty-first century, power is the ability to change the behavior of computers. If you cant change the behavior of computers, you live within a Skinner box created by the people who can change the behavior of computers. Simply put, open software provides the opportunity to view the source and in some cases modifiy it to suit your needs. We can look within it to ensure that our privacy is not being compromised by it. Software licensed under a Free Software Foundation approved license offers much more than the simple option to look at the software - it guarantees that you have certain freedoms, including the freedom to redistribute modified copies - see the Free Software Foundation website for more info - FSF
